Research
The LifeModem Foundation's core initiative is to support basic and clinical research concerning cancer. LifeModem also supports research efforts that intend to further the understanding of the African American community's propensity for developing cancer and encourages the scientific evaluation of complementary and alternative dietary strategies for cancer prevention and treatment.
The Facts
- For all cancers combined, African Americans have the highest death rates compared to other ethnic populations in the U.S.1
- For both African American men and women, cancer of the colon ranks third among the leading causes of cancer mortalities.2
- Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among African American women.2
- African American men have a higher mortality rate from prostate cancer than any other ethnic group.2
- Due to the lack of information, cancers among African Americans are frequently diagnosed after the cancer has metastasized and spread to regional or distant sites.2
- African American high school students are less likely to eat fruits and vegetables (known cancer fighting foods) compared to their White counterparts, and it has been proven that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can significantly reduce the risk of developing cancer.3
