Awareness
LifeModem foundation aims to increase the African American community's knowledge of its overwhelming susceptibility to cancer through educational outreach. Other elements of awareness and education include providing information about healthy lifestyle alternatives, such as physical fitness and effective diet options to reduce cancer risks. There are three subcomponents of awareness that LifeModem addresses.
The “Next Generation” program
The “Next Generation” program is an awareness program that targets pre-college youth by encouraging them to take accountibility for their health. The program teaches them the importance of health and wellness before they become susceptible to adult forms of cancer. Issues, such as physical fitness and well-balanced diets are incorporated in the program philosophy. This, in turn, will create an opportunity for peers to educate peers and provide African American youth with the tools necessary for a lifetime of healthy living.
The “Life Connection” program
The “Life Connection” program targets adults age 35 and over as they transition into maturity. LifeModem addresses issues of preventable causes of cancer (i.e. tobacco use, physical inactivity, poor nutrition) and provides information about the importance of early detection, health screenings, and available treatment options for various cancers (specifically prostate, colon, and breast cancer).
Physical fitness is also emphasized, including effective diet options to reduce cancer risks. The idea is to counteract the stigma that many adult African Americans have about seeking health advice and to make them comfortable with the idea of being familiar with a physician, along with undergoing regular health examinations.
Events
LifeModem reaches the community-at-large through participation in workshops, health fairs, and other community activities. We also participate in collaborations with other nonprofits, industry, and academia to broaden our presence and increase awareness.
